Some people believe that the name of Pacitan come from the word "Pacitan" which means "snacks", it is few of food bot it can not make people full. This is said because Pacitan in the old time is a poor area, it is hard to fill the needed of food of pacitan peoples; it is not enough food that time (in period of Sultan Agung [1613-1645] that name of pacitan come in babat Momana).

Pacitan is a city that located in java island. In the XV century, Hindu and Budha had spread in pacitan that have center in Majapahit Kingdom which is commanded by Ki Ageng Buwono Keling that live in Jati, Kebonagung district (Drs. Ronggosaputro;1980). On the other hand, Islam in pacitan was brought by Ki Ageng Petung (Kyai Siti Geseng) with Syekh Maulana Maghribi and Kyai Ampok Boyo (Ki Ageng Posong) and was helped by Kyai Menakospal from Trenggalek.

There are found an inscription of ancient java that state about Ki Ageng Buwono Keling is the ruler in wengker kidul (south shore area).

Artinya : dahulu ada seorang pendekar ternama bernama buwono keling yang telah mencapai kesempurnaan, dalam ilmu kebathinan dan kekebalan. Seorang guru diantara orang bijaksana dan beliau inilah yang menjadi perintis dan pemakrarsa daerah sekitarnya. (in indonesia)

It means; there was a well known master named buwono keling that already reach its perfection in knowledge of spiritual and invulnerability. A master among wise people and he is the leader of the surrounding area. (in english)

In a guerrilla war in 1747 - 1749 (in Plaihan Nagari War [1746-1755]against VOC, Netherland. Prince Mangkubumi had his defeat. The price, with 12 followers move back to the south while looking for the help of strong people to help on his war. In 25 Desember 1749 that prince mangkubumi campaign fall very weak, with the help of Setroketipo, Prince Mangkubumi was given a drink from Pace fruit which is submerged in coconut essence water, and immediately, at that time, the prince and his 12 followers regain their strength back. That location was remembered with "pace-sapengetan" and in daily conversation people said it as "pace-tan", then it came the name for pacitan district. (Drs. Ronggosaputro;1980)

After Prince Mangkubumi became Hamengku Buwono I, he fulfill his promise to his 12 followers. Setroketipo was nominated to be the second commander of district pacitan. Before, Raden Ngabehi Tumenggung Notoprojo was also be nominated by the Prince Mangkubumi at 17 January 1750 after he often helped Prince Mangkubumi when having guerrilla war in pacitan area.
